It’s A Marathon Not A Sprint

The temptation at the beginning of every year is to try and change all of your habits at once. That’s a recipe for failure. Take it easy, make just a few healthy changes, like drinking more water and getting up and moving at least 10 minutes a day. Even 10 minutes can seem like a long time when you haven’t been doing anything. That’s the first step, and every step adds up.

TODAY: CUT BACK ON HOW MUCH YOU EAT AND GET MOVING.

There Is No Bad Food, Just Bad Portions

Dietary researchers have just made one of those findings that just make you say “duh”! They have found that it doesn’t matter if you follow a low fat, low carb, low meat, low starch, or low mein diet. All that matters is whether you eat more calories than you use up. So we’re on the right track with our eat less exercise more plan. We’ll continue to try each of the varieties of diets. It keeps things interesting while encouraging you to pay attention to what you eat.

TODAY: EAT WHAT YOU WANT… JUST EAT LESS THAN YOU DID THE LAST TIME!

You Have A Stepper

You may think that exercise equipment is too expensive or takes up too much space. Well maybe you already have some and don’t know it. You likely have a stepper. It’s right there, going between the floors of your house. Honest. It will work just like the machine. Maybe even better because it will actually take you somewhere! Try bringing in packages one at a time. Taking laundry downstairs piece by piece rather than filling up a basket full before heading down. Remember, when you weight less you’ll be carrying less too.

TODAY: GO UP AND DOWN THE STAIRS A FEW TIMES.

A Doggie Bag Will Help You With Your Pants

I don’t mean the kind where your tongue hangs out. I mean when your belly hangs out!

The weekend is here and you are going to get those temptations again. Go ahead. Eat out. Enjoy your meals. Just don’t eat it all at one sitting. The reality is that food portions in the US have increased over the past 20 years. It’s helped to contribute to the obesity epidemic. Or it’s an excuse for it. But either way, restaurant portions are often much more than you should eat at one sitting. So here’s a trick. Order what you want. But have them splt it in the kitchen before it’s sent out to you. Have them go ahead and put half in a to-go box. You’ll have a filling meal and then have another one with your favorites later in the week. Just take it home and pop it in the freezer. That way you won’t waste anything and you won’t WAIST anything either.

TODAY: HAVE HALF OF ANY RESTAURANT MEAL PREPARED TO GO.

80 – 20 Rule

I’ll start the week with a short bit of advice. If you watch what you eat 80% of the time the other 20% is not  problem.

TODAY: PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU EAT!

Before And After

I keep telling you that water is key to your diet and overall health. An easy way to train yourself to get what you need is to drink a glass of water before and after each meal. You’ll find that doing it that way will help you eat less and feel more full while giving you the hydration you need to flush proteins safely out of your system. When eating out you’ll also eliminate an expensive drink. Make sure you tell your waitress that you’re drinking the water for your diet so she doesn’t think you’re just being cheap.

TODAY: DRINK A GLASS OF WATER BEFORE AND AFTER EACH MEAL.

16 Ounces And What Do You Get?

A little parody of the old Ernie Ford song “16 Tons” works well to remind you to drink eight glasses of water a day. Don’t feel intimidated by how much “8 glasses of water” is. Those are 8 ounce glasses, a cup.  A 16 ounce glass is two cups. (Gee, now I’m a math wizzard.) Get a pint glass, it holds sixteen ounces (that’s a pint). Just drink two of those glasses of water in the morning and two in the afternoon. But don’t ignore this! You DEFINITELY need this water to help curb your appetite and flush the proteins out of your system to keep your kidneys healthy.

Sure Ernie Ford was known as the “Ole’ Pea Picker”. Until your body adjusts to it you may be just an “Ole’ Pee er”.

TODAY: FIND A 16 OUNCE GLASS TO USE WHEN DRINKING YOUR NO CALORIE WATER.
